Pedicabs

The City of Melbourne offers small businesses the opportunity to provide active transport through pedicab permits. Pedicabs provide an alternate transport method throughout the CBD, aimed at tourists looking to get to venues and events.

Pedicab vehicles are modified tricycles, designed as a sustainable taxi service. They can operate in off road shared paths, separated bike lanes and on road shared zones.

We currently permit one pedicab business to operate within the city, from several designated rest and pick up locations.

Pedicab submissions are currently closed

Future applications for pedicabs will be handled via an expression of interest (EOI) process.

Application requirements

Businesses looking to submit an EOI to operate Pedicabs in the City of Melbourne, will need to provide information on the following:

  • Applicants must demonstrate they can provide the service throughout the city, operating in protected bike lanes, shared zones and off-road shared paths.
  • Applicants must be able to provide design details of pedicabs to be reviewed, to ensure they will fit in protected bike lanes and shared paths and not impact on the pedestrian and cyclist movement.
  • Applicants must be able to provide a plan for designated pick up, drop off and rest locations throughout the city, which are easily accessed by potential patrons.
  • Applicants must demonstrate their expertise in delivering pedicab services by providing an adequate management plan, covering all details of the proposed operation.
