My Melbourne Student Ambassadors

The My Melbourne Student Ambassadors leadership program plays a key role in co-designing, supporting, and promoting City of Melbourne initiatives to international student communities studying, living, and working in Melbourne.

An annual voluntary program, it supports students in their professional development so they can be the voice of their peers and address the issues and needs of the international student community.

Join the My Melbourne Student Ambassador program

My Melbourne Student Ambassadors represent the City of Melbourne and co-design and support initiatives for international student communities.

As an ambassador, we are looking for dedicated and passionate students that are keen to promote City of Melbourne initiatives via social media, actively support international student life through event support and want to have new experiences in Melbourne.

Ambassadors will gain opportunities to learn and support City of Melbourne through event operations, networking, being tour leaders and championing and supporting our City of Melbourne International Students social media.

Our previous ambassadors have led projects such as Student Welcome Tours, World Flavours Cooking workshops, Student City Student Stories podcasts, Home away from home videos and much more.

Eligibility

Applicants applying for the role must be current international students, with strong links to the international student sector. Recently graduated international students (under two years) can also apply.

All volunteers who participate in City of Melbourne activities are required to undergo a Police Check and Working with Children Check as part of the pre-engagement process.

What we are looking for

The Melbourne Student Ambassadors program is highly competitive, receiving many applications each year. We are seeking applicants who can demonstrate a high level of:

  • Engagement with the international student communities.
  • Active on social media and can regularly promote City of Melbourne initiatives.
  • Event operations experience.
  • Communication in written and verbal to diverse communities.
  • Interested and comfortable in communicating with stakeholders.
  • Passionate about giving back to community and supporting the City of Melbourne in delivering an inclusive, cleaner, and welcoming city.

Hey Melbourne. We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land we live on, the Wurundjeri Woi wurrung and the Bunurong and Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. We pay respect to their Elders past and present.

We acknowledge and honour their unbroken spiritual and cultural connection to this land. We accept the invitation in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. We are committed to walking together to build a better future.

Meeting the Councillor was a real highlight. It gave me a firsthand look at how local leadership in Melbourne operates. Hearing their insights made me feel more connected to the city and its community. It was inspiring to see that our voices as students genuinely matter.

Hello. As a student ambassador, I have had many opportunities to help co design different events including the Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome 2025 and the Colombian Night at The Couch.

These experiences have helped me build my communication, leadership and time management skills. They have also helped me grow my confidence overall.

As a 2025 student ambassador with no prior event planning experience, I learned to lead multicultural teams while organising our first Indonesian Night in Melbourne. I also strengthened my videography and editing skills by producing promotional content for the City of Melbourne’s International Students team. This helped their social media reach more diverse audiences.

When I started this program, I had only been living in Melbourne for two months. What could have been a challenging period of adjustment became much easier because the program helped me settle in. It gave me a sense of belonging and the chance to share meaningful experiences with others. It made Melbourne feel familiar and comforting, like a true home away from home.

I attended many events and conferences. These helped me improve my communication skills across generations and cultural backgrounds.

My experiences in event management and promoting activities through social media made me much more confident.
I value the chance to hear, connect with and appreciate cultures beyond my own.

Participating in the International Student Summit deepened my belief in bridging cultures and sharing Melbourne’s values on an international stage.

In my role as an ambassador, I have seen how the program builds a strong and supportive network. It helps us grow both personally and professionally.

We took part in workshops on public speaking, networking and social media building. These did not just sharpen our skills. They also opened doors. We connected with professionals from different industries. We learned how they built their careers. We learned how to present ourselves with greater confidence.

I want to give a special thank you to Councillor Andrew Rowse for joining us at the Vietnamese Mid Autumn Festival. This program has been incredibly special to me. It was my first time co designing the festival with Mary and The Couch volunteers.

Seeing more than 180, especially from the Vietnamese cohort, truly meant the world to me. Wearing my Ao Dai and emceeing in Melbourne was my best moment in 2025.

As an HR student, the program has truly opened my eyes. Meeting my fellow ambassadors, the City of Melbourne education team, The Couch and making new friends has shown me how powerful it is when people feel they truly belong. It has shown me how meaningful it is when we are able to give back wherever we can.

Meeting the Lord Mayor and Councillors to discuss the future of international student policies was very inspiring. It strengthened my commitment to this field. Thank you.
