Carers

Carers play an invaluable role in the community. More than 2.6 million Australians provide help and support to a family member or friend.

An older woman smiles at a woman sitting beside her, who has placed a friendly hand on her shoulder. The other woman's face is not visible in the photo.

Carers don’t fit a mould; they come from all walks of life, all cultures and all religions.

It is important for carers to keep in touch with the services, activities and people in their neighbourhood.

Caring Cities – engaging older carers in the City of Melbourne

With support from the international City Hub and Network for Gender Equity (CHANGE) Caring Cities program, the City of Melbourne conducted research from June to August 2025 to explore the experiences of older carers through interviews and focus groups. The research identified four key recommendations for government departments, service providers, and community organisations to keep in mind:

  1. Older carers in Melbourne are dedicated, resourceful, and loving. Let’s honour their valuable contributions and build on their strengths.
  2. Older carers are eager for connection and community. Let’s offer inclusive and flexible programming tailored to their lives.
  3. Government and community services can be life-changing for carers. Let’s make them easier to learn about, access, and navigate.
  4. Older carers have so much to offer. Let’s create opportunities for them to contribute.
