Labour Day Monday 9 March

All City of Melbourne Libraries are closed.

This includes Toy Libraries and Makerspaces. We reopen on Tuesday 10 March as usual.

The street access lift from Flinders Lane at City Library is out of order.

Access will be by stairs only until further notice. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Public holiday hours 2026

narrm ngarrgu Library will open on Australia Day Monday 26 January from 10am to 5pm.

All libraries will be closed for Easter from Friday 3 April to Monday 6 April inclusive.

Docklands opening times

Docklands toy library may be closed from time to time when the space is booked. To confirm the toy library is open please ring 1800 695 427 and select Library at The Dock option.

Located near bustling Degraves Street and co-located with the Centre for Adult Education, City Library is Victoria's busiest public lending library. The library has become a major destination and meeting place for residents, workers, students and visitors. After 20 years, it has undergone a revamp – creating a space for Melburnians and visitors to borrow books, access technology and come together to share ideas.

The Kathleen Syme Library and Community Centre is a modern, welcoming space where all members of the community can read, connect, learn and create. The centre is home to a library, learning and training rooms with a computer lab, recording studio, meeting rooms, community activity spaces and a cafe.

Located on the waterfront, Library at The Dock is a next-generation library and community hub. As well as the library collection, there is a recording studio, creative editing suites, community spaces and a large performance venue. A gallery and exhibition space celebrates Docklands' heritage.

narrm ngarrgu Library and Family Services is located in the heart of the Queen Victoria Market precinct. Informed by extensive community consultation, the new 3000 m2 space has been designed so everyone in our diverse community can explore their interests, learn something new and access integrated family support.

​narrm ngarrgu spans across​ three levels and features a dedicated children's library, a new family services​ centre, bookable spaces and a community rooftop terrace overlooking the bustling market precinct and stunning city skyline.

It’s an oasis for families in our busy city. Pop in to browse the extensive book collection, admire the artworks or explore your creativity in the makerspace with 3D printers, laser cutters, paint booths, sewing machines and sound studios.

The library also offers digital literacy classes so you can learn how to use software and online platforms.

One of the longest established libraries in Victoria, North Melbourne Library was built in 1882 and opened in 1884 as a mechanics institute and library. Since 1905 it has provided a free public lending service to the City of Melbourne.
