Soil monitoring

We conduct soil tests to ensure public spaces are safe.

City of Melbourne is committed to providing safe spaces for everyone to enjoy. As part of this commitment, we proactively conduct soil tests at our community facilities.

Soil contamination is very common in residential and inner-city areas, and regular testing is part of our ongoing effort to protect community health and to ensure our public spaces meet environmental safety standards.

Our process for managing contaminated soil is guided by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria’s Environment Protection Act 2017 External link and Environment Protection Regulations 2021 External link which establish a framework for protecting human health and the environment from pollution and waste.

Test your garden soil

GardenSafe is a soil screening program run by the Citizen Science team at EPA Victoria. The one-year pilot aims to equip community with the knowledge and resources they need to understand backyard soil quality.

GardenSafe invites Victorians to send three garden soil samples for assessment.

In return, you will receive a personalised report with the results from your garden. We’ll also provide you with tools to understand your results and ways to reduce harm from pollution and waste.
