Multicultural business community

Melbourne is a proud multicultural city, with people from all over the world calling the municipality home.

People smeared with rainbow colours, jumping, cheering and celebrating Holi Festival.

Fifty-five per cent of residents in our municipality were born overseas and more than 70 per cent have at least one parent who was born overseas.

Over 260 languages are spoken across metropolitan Melbourne, making it an ideal business hub for the Indo-Pacific region.

How we support the multicultural business community

City of Melbourne undertakes a broad range of activities that support diaspora groups in the municipality, including in areas such as social welfare, student assistance, business development, community and cultural events, programs, and grants.

As part of our international engagement, City of Melbourne works with and supports diaspora by:

  • connecting with diaspora business people who want to be involved in our international projects
  • supporting entrepreneurialism through facilitating connections and capacity building programs
  • celebrating and profiling the international success of diaspora-owned and managed businesses, and diaspora involved in international business
  • running events and networking opportunities for our markets of focus
  • involving international students in business-related events.

The City of Melbourne respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land we govern, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong / Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin and pays respect to their Elders past and present.

We acknowledge and honour the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection they have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.

We accept the invitation in the Uluru Statement from the Heart and are committed to walking together to build a better future.
