Oil and liquid waste
Oil and liquid waste must be stored in the correct type of container and collected from inside your property. Discharge from a business, including grease, oil or other liquid waste, must not be illegally placed in a bin or compactor, dumped or poured down a stormwater drain. Penalties will apply for non-compliance.

Crates and other containers
Empty crates, oil drums, gas canisters or kegs left in the street around your business are unattractive and can cause accidents. Penalties may also apply.
We do not collect these items as they remain the property of the original producer. You must make arrangements with your suppliers for regular collection. These items must be stored on the business premises until they are collected.
Electronic waste
If you have electronics or appliances to recycle, contact approved waste collectors or visit Business Recycling External link.
Hazardous and Dangerous Goods Waste
Many businesses such as hairdressers, mechanics and medical centres generate hazardous or dangerous goods waste. It is your responsibility to arrange a private waste collection service for hazardous and dangerous goods waste types which may include;
- nitrous oxide (N20) canisters
- kitchen chemicals
- bathroom cleaners and solvents
- workshop, garden and commercial and industrial chemicals
- poisons and motor fluids
- sharps, pharmaceuticals and medical waste
- batteries
All hazardous and dangerous waste must be correctly disposed of according to the relevant Victorian Environment Protection and WorkSafe Victoria laws and guidelines.
Hard rubbish
City of Melbourne does not provide a collection service to businesses for bulky rubbish items. Businesses are responsible for their own waste and need to use a private contractor to remove these items.
Other recycling services
Many items are recyclable but are not suitable to go into your recycling bin. Planet Ark’s Business Recycling External link website can help you find collection services for around 90 different materials.
