Adaptive reuse of buildings

The City of Melbourne has released new guidelines to support property owners to transform old and low-grade offices into innovative new spaces to safeguard the city’s future.

Melbourne’s vast array of unique buildings offer a window into the historical heart and soul of Melbourne. However, many need revitalisation to meet modern standards and help tackle current urban challenges.

The Adaptive Reuse of Office Buildings Guidelines support mid-tier building retrofits to reduce carbon emissions and increase housing supply.
The Guidelines will assist property owners, architects, developers, and planners in evaluating feasibility, navigating regulatory requirements, and incorporating innovative designs.

These guidelines aim to streamline planning processes and encourage best practices, complementing the Retrofit Melbourne Plan to reduce environmental impacts and enhance urban sustainability.

For further information or to book a pre-planning meeting, please email planning@melbourne.vic.gov.au and include Adaptive Reuse in the subject header.
