Parking rules and enforcement

Towed and impounded vehicles

We tow and impound vehicles if they are parked in Clearway or Tow Away zones, obstructing access, unregistered or considered abandoned. Find out what to do if your vehicle is towed.

Illegally parked or abandoned vehicles

If you notice an issue caused by illegal parking or by an abandoned vehicle or bicycle, you can report it.

Private parking agreements

Private parking agreements and private enforcement agreements can prevent illegal or unauthorised parking on private property or privately owned roads.

Why have parking rules?

We need the road rules to help us keep our capital city moving safely. We set the parking conditions you see on the signs, and the fees you pay to park on the street. We use these controls to manage our limited parking spaces for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors. Without parking controls, the few spaces we have would always be full of cars.

We enforce parking conditions to promote fair access to the limited kerbside parking supply and maintain safety.

Most (97 per cent) of the parking fines we issue relate to:

  • Parking for too long
  • Payment for parking
  • Stopping in no stopping areas
  • Stopping where you aren’t eligible.

Parking officers

Our parking officers educate and encourage drivers to follow the rules. This means that when a driver is with an offending vehicle, they are typically given an opportunity to move before being fined. If you don’t follow a request made by a parking officer within a reasonable time, you may get a parking fine.

Report an illegally parked vehicle

If there is any danger to the public or public space, please call us immediately on 03 9658 9658.

Better parking in your neighbourhood

Parking improvements

We’re delivering our Parking and Kerbside Management Plan. That means we’re reviewing and revising the parking in all neighbourhoods across the City of Melbourne to make parking simpler and fairer. Improvements include cheaper rates for off-peak times and free parking for short stops under 15 minutes with the EasyPark app.
