Motorcycles

Learn how we are making Melbourne safer and more attractive for motorcycle riders.

About 2700 people travel by motorcycle to the city of Melbourne for work each day. Motorcycles are space-efficient, cheap to run and cause less wear and tear to our roads. Motorcyclists often enjoy shorter travel times and are less affected by traffic congestion. Low-emissions electric motorcycles are becoming available which are also quieter.

We are focusing on improving safety and convenience for all road users including motorcycle riders by:

  • providing more motorcycle parking
  • Working to provide safer roads for all users including people riding motorcycles
  • engaging with state government and community groups to advocate for improved motorcycle safety

Motorcycle safety

While the number of motorcycle fatalities and serious injuries has been falling over the last 10 years, people riding motorcycles are over-represented in road crashes.

We support the Victorian Government’s work to promote motorcycle safety by developing behavourial programs and identifying on-road hazards. We also support motorcycle safety in road management and design, supporting the use of safer barriers, bollards and skid-resistant plate covers for motorcyclists for construction sites and road works.

Motorcycle parking

We have on-street parking spaces for more than 500 motorcycles in the CBD.
