Our top tips to build better connections:
- Get your menu translated: consider having key customer resources translated for your Chinese visitors. Consider menus, size guides and opening/closing times. In hospitality, Chinese customers really like visual menus with images and extra detail on any local ingredients.
- Employ staff who also speak Mandarin: do you know how to say hello in Mandarin? Consider employing someone who does. Having a bilingual staff member could really help to ensure things don’t get lost in translation. And you could also provide cultural training to staff.
- Use Chinese promotional platforms: investigate promotional opportunities on Chinese social media platforms, like WeChat or other popular platforms, such as travel sites Ctrip, Fliggy, Qunar or Mafengwo. Also consider cross-border sales opportunities through major e-commerce platforms, such as Taobao, Tmall Global, Pinduoduo, JD.com, Kaola, Suning, VIP.com.

Sichuan cuisine attracts food enthusiasts from various ethnic backgrounds who come to experience, the spicy and delicious Sichuan cuisine. Not just the taste experience - the cuisine also acts as a cultural 'ambassador' across the ocean, blending Sichuan's passionate warmth with Australia's multicultural essence.
In 2016, Victoria and Sichuan established a Sister-State Relationship.
In 2017, Melbourne, capital city of Victoria, and Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, became economic partner cities.
In 2024, the two cities joined hands to continue their illustrious chapter, formally established a friendly and cooperative city relationship with cuisine as the “ambassador” and exchange as the “bridge”, supported and promoted by the governments of both cities.
Chengdu renowned Restaurant Chen Mapo Tofu Executive Chef Zhang Fa and his culinary team were invited to participate in the 2024 Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, collaborating with Melbourne restaurant Chef David, to host a 'Taste of Chengdu' Sichuan cuisine dinner event.
