East Melbourne Library

Stylish and inviting, East Melbourne Library is one of Australia's most ecologically sustainable public libraries.

It offers a friendly team of library staff with plenty of quiet study space, a north-facing deck with community herb garden and bursting with a fresh and well maintained collection of books, magazines and movies.

Designed and built to minimise environmental impact and maximise indoor air quality, East Melbourne Library is an ecologically sustainable public library.

As well as collections and programs for adults and children, the library is home to a community garden with herbs and seasonal produce, and bee hives provided by Melbourne City Rooftop Honey.

East Melbourne Library has comfortable, functional and affordable spaces for hire for community and commercial groups. The rooms for hire are suitable for:

  • meetings
  • community education programs
  • seminars and conferences
  • training
  • passive indoor recreational activities
  • cultural events.

We want East Melbourne Library to be a place where programs and opportunities can be created for the community, by the community.

In line with Council’s 2025-26 budget, hire fees will change from 1 July 2025. All booking requests processed prior to close of business on Monday 30 June 2025 will remain at the 2024-25 amounts.
