Gladys Liu is an accomplished Australian politician and public servant who has dedicated much of her career to advocating for her community with passion and commitment. Gladys made history as the first Chinese-Australian woman to be elected to the Australian House of Representatives and served as the Member of Parliament for Chisholm from 2019 to 2022. Gladys is now a Councillor at the City of Melbourne and a Fitness Instructor.
Born in Hong Kong, Gladys immigrated to Australia in 1985 following securing a scholarship to study Speech Pathology at La Trobe University and became an Australian citizen in 1992. As an immigrant, she understands the struggles of adapting to a new country and is deeply committed to supporting multicultural communities in Australia.
Gladys’s political journey began as an Adviser to the Opposition Leader and then Premier Ted Baillieu and Premier Denis Napthine, advising them on multicultural affairs and community engagement.
During her time in federal government, she worked tirelessly on policies related to immigration and multicultural inclusiveness and the wellbeing of her constituents. Her focus was on promoting migrant women in business and leadership.
As a Councillor at the City of Melbourne, Gladys currently serves as the Community, Health and City Services Portfolio Head, the Safety and Cleaning Portfolio Deputy and is a representative on the Invest Melbourne Advisory Committee. She is continuing her work of promoting social cohesion and creating opportunities for everyone in Melbourne to thrive.
Gladys is also a proud mother of two grown up children - Derek Yu, a Harvard Business School graduate who is now the Head of Strategy at Coles and Sally Yu, a former Australian U18 Girl’s Chess Champion, after finishing studying at Princeton is now the Head of Strategy at Asahi and plays for the Australian National team for Ultimate Frisbee.
